The New Jockey Club
Sha Tin Rowing Centre

August 2023

The project involved a complete exterior and interior refurbishment of an existing 2-storey building, and consisted essentially of both a vertical extension of 1-storey a top and a horizontal extension of a 4-storey new annex adjoining the old building. The development potential of the site was, as a result, fully maximized with an increase in site coverage and building height. The floor areas increased substantially from 1500 sg. m to over 3000 sq. m enabling the addition of a series of new boat storage, training facilities and functional spaces to support the future development of rowing.

The entire building was converted to facilitate full barrier-free accessibility, and allfire safety and building services provisions were totally renewed and upgraded to the current higher and more stringent standards.

THE YORK HOUSE

July 2013 ~ May 2015

Contract sum: HKD53,400,000

In this project, we rectified the structures and alternated the layout. “The York House” is the house of our client and it was a controversial structure during the Hong Kong Chief Executive election in 2012. Therefore, in order to meet the demanding expectation from the mass media, an efficient schedule to provide the structural changes was the main challenge of the project.

Despite the pressure from the mass media, our team exceeded the expectations of our client by completing our work earlier than planned. Our company also reported our progress to the public in a timely manner. Most importantly, our company produced a masterpiece that our clients and designer loved a lot. We are very happy that our client could move back to their home earlier than scheduled and got back to their daily life.

Here are the highlights of our work:

●To merge two different houses by building a steel bridge with a glass wall

●To build a unique sawncut fairfaced fence wall and slab

●To renovate the internal area and external envelop with craftsmanship

PRIMARY SCHOOLS
AT KAI TAK DEVELOPMENT

May 2014 ~ December 2016

Contract sum:HKD17,000,000

The main contractor was Kaden Construction Limited and the Client was Architectural Services Department. The main purpose of this project is to erect a form-work to the substructure and superstructure of this primary school. It was 5-story building comprising of 20 classrooms, a hall, basketball court and multi-purpose room and a garden.  The most important task was to design and construct a large extension of different types of fairfaced walls and slabs in this building as per the criteria of the Project Architect. As such, it required much effort in preparing the design drawings for Architect’s approval in advance and allocate numerous skillful carpenters to complete the form-work mold according to the site progress of work.

Upon full coordination with the main contractor and the client's representative, the quality building was delivered to the client on time. The end users, especially teachers and pupils were very happy with this unique design and quality of work done on this primary school.

REVITALIZATION OF THE REAR PORTION OF CATTLE DEPOT

December 2016 – April 2019

Contract sum: HKD70,000,000

The former Ma Tau Kok Livestock Quarantine Station, commonly known as the "Cattle Depot", was completed in 1908 and has been used as a cattle quarantine and slaughter center until 1999. It is the only pre-war cattle and livestock slaughter center in Hong Kong that was successful. The site in front of the "Cattle Depot" was later converted into the Cattle Depot art village in 2001, where the place was rented out to art groups or local artists as studios. Art events were also held here from time to time. In 2009, the Antiquities Advisory Board even rated the entire “Cattle Depot” as a Grade II historical building. In 2013, the Kowloon City District Council proposed to launch the "Community Key Project Plan (Kowloon City District) - Revitalize and Develop the Land Behind the Cowshed" to provide more public leisure space in the district and become the current Cattle Depot Art Park with the theme of culture and art. Hence, our company was approached to carry out this task. The project is characterized by proceeding conservation works on heritage structures and at the same time, retaining many trees and restoring some fabrics.

Highlights of our work:

1.     Site Formation Works

2.     Construction of a Visitor Center

3.    Design, supply and install building services in the Visitor Center and External Areas

4.     Construction of underground drainage system in Visitor Center and External Areas

5.     Landscape Works

6.     External works

7.     Conservation works

Due to the site constraints, the most difficult obstacle we need to overcome was to provide a haul road assessing to these area and organize the order of these works. In spite of this, the site team managed each difficulty well and work together with the client's representatives to achieve the milestone dates. This project was timely completed and this park was opened to the public in July 2019.

REDEVELOPMENT OF SAI LAU KOK GARDEN

November 2016 ~ February 2019
Contract sum: HKD73,000,000

Background of this project

The scope of work is to demolish a spiral stair next to the garden and existing facilities such as pavilions, fountain, trellis, pump room, planters and seating benches.   There is a requirement to divert the existing main water supply pipe to run across the new building to bring water supply to the multi-purpose Hall and the podium garden.

In addition to this, there is also a request to build a new plant room block and a steel bridge. These new structures will be connected to the existing footbridge. Meanwhile, the existing trees in the garden will either be felled, retained or transplanted.

Complexity and difficulties of this project

This project comprises of a variety of underground services and numerous design and build elements such as skylight, glass cone, curved glass balustrade, glass wall, glass screen wall, glass and aluminum folding feature wall, ancient wall tile feature wall, steel feature post and associated ss mesh within 20 months for the steel Bridges and RC structures.  One of the most challenging aspect of this project is the limited working space , as well as only one unique site access-point. Apart from this, there are numerous design changes imposed during this project. This requires us to exert much more effort to coordinate each area in detail and make them happen on site.

Achievement

No matter what difficulties we face on site, this project has been completed in a timely manner.  A quality garden is delivered to the Client. The team spirit of our company has been further escalated.  Most importantly, our capability has also been recognized by our client.
